[27] Iranian Human Mutation Database

Aims and Objectives:
"About 20 years have elapsed since the first single base pair substitution underlying an inherited disease in humans was characterized at the DNA level. Disease-associated gene lesions are currently collected and publicized by the Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD) in Cardiff, locus-specific mutation databases, and to some extent also by the Genome Database (GDB) and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) as comprehensive and up-to-date resources for information about genetic disorders and mutations causing them. Nowadays most countries (Japan, Sweden, Germany, England, Australia, ...) are trying to establish their research results in independent databases. Starting Iranian Human Mutation Gene Bank (IHMGB) was an important progress regarding presentation of the latest findings in Iranian genetic disease field in an international level and has had a great impact on the mutual exchange of views with the centers outside of the country. Establishment of The Iranian Human Mutation Database is the next step toward completion of the Iranian Human Mutation Gene Bank. This database makes the information about the latest genetic researches in Iran available for the scientists inside or outside of the country in addition to available samples in DNA bank. [53] Traditional Medicine and Materia Medica Research Center (TMRC)

Aims and Objectives:
"The Iranian Traditional Medicine looks at patients and diseases through an angle different from that of modern medicine . Modern medicine has an abstract supervision on the work of organs, tissues and genes, considering the disease as the driving force behind an imbalance in body performance. It does it's utmost to strike a balance in organ, tissue or gene performance to cure the disease. The ITM, however, views man as one entity. Under ITM a disease shows that the whole body is imbalanced. So it tries to strike an overall balance. Prominent Iranian physician Akhaveini Bokharaei, author of "Hedayat-ul-Motealemin" says "Medicine was a profession to maintain man's health , and retrieve it through science and experience when it was lost." Iran's Traditional Medicine brings together natural sciences , anatomy , diagnosis, therapeutic and materia medica."

[54] Yazd International Center for Living with Desert (YICLD)

Aims and Objectives:
"Yazd as an ancient Iranian city at the heart of Iran has played a vital role in preserving the Persian culture and civilization. The Yazd Province provides abundant examples of knowledge and practices for living in desert environments and combating desertification. Successful efforts to fix sand dunes and establish shelterbelts to combat dust storms are but a few examples. The architectural and cultural heritage shows remarkable adaptations to desert living. In May 2000 an international symposium was held in Yazd under a UNDP regional project "Regional Symposium on Sustainable Development of Desert Communities" (RAS/99/063). The Yazd Declaration resolved to establish an International Center in Yazd. Yazd International Center for Living with Desert (YICLD) proposes to study the traditional and modern techniques of, and realities faced by, desert communities such as Yazd. By studying, compiling, analyzing and sharing this traditional knowledge and best practices of co-existence and harmony, societies in similar desert environment could assist each other and enhance sustainable development in desert regions, principally in Asia, that are threatened with desertification and natural resources depletion. The Yazd International Centre will focus on information sharing and awareness raising through organising national, regional and international consultations and studies on issues centred on living with the desert. Its aim is to culminate in the exchange of expertise and sustainable development practices in this context throughout the globe. Efforts will be made through the Centre to promote interest among the regional neighbours and international donors and aid agencies to mobilise resources for implementation of long-term activities, inter-country learning and exchange and possible regional collaboration."
